I thought AMD has open source drivers for their GPUs?
- ekianjo 3y agoOf course not. Most of it is just binary blobs. They just open source how to interface with the blobs
- chrismorgan 3y agoI don’t know much about the space, but I believe the situation is that the AMDGPU driver is open-source, but that there’s also the closed-source AMDGPU PRO userspace driver that sits atop it and can add certain extra functionality that (I gather) most people will never care about and which potentially performs a lot worse, so that for most users the recommendation is not to use it. - unethical_ban 3y agoSame. I'm skeptical of people who say otherwise just because I've heard AMD does open source for so long.
