"Since most software products charge a flat per-user fee"
Is wonder if that is actually true for services that aren't entirely ad supported.
Here a non exhaustive list that defies this
- free2play games. It's all about those whales.
- games. Preorder, delux/collector editions, DLC, battle passes, micro transactions, etc.
- a bunch of SaaS offerings are adding new AI tiers right now, e.g. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Dueling to name a few.
There was definitely a time when the name of the game in tech, was expanding the user base. Right now it feels like everyone is trying their hardest to increase their per user revenue or as companies would put it, capture more of the value they generate.
One might think, that this could actually have its upsides. Companies increasing the value to their existing users to entice them to pay more, but by and large this isn't what I'm seeing. Instead it feels like many are instead putting existing features behind higher paywalls, churning out junk content, particularly in games as well as adding the buzzword of the year, e.g. NFT, metaverse, AI.
