Hi guys! I'm the OP. I don't have time to respond to everyone here, but let me just say it's been quite gratifying to see the productive discussion this has generated. I wrote this post late at night, after a particularly exhausting group activity, hoping to thoughtfully react to my frustration. Whether or not I managed that, these sorts of discussions are just what I was hoping for!
