Record summer heat causes costly damage to Texas water systems
- tuatoru 3y agoMore the dryness than directly the heat, apparently. The soil in which the pipes exist moved/contracted due to dryness. The article doesn't explicitly say this, but low water pressure due to high demand can cause old brittle pipes to implode here and there:- "In addition to the dry, shifting soil, the leaks result from the brittleness of aging pipes and a high demand on the city’s water infrastructure"
- toomuchtodo 3y agoSomething to note is that this not only impacts water pipes, but also building foundations. Foundation damage as a covered peril on insurance policies in Texas is not common, and it’s already the #1 state for foundation failures. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/long-stretch-excessive-heat-foundation-problems-north-texas/287-79ef3b84-c35f-48d5-845f-6e93760b2645 https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/long-stretch-excessi...
