Ask HN: Have you started getting ads in YouTube?
So I have been using an adblocker (ublock origin) on youtube for a while now, basically since the ad time and video time became 1:1, and it's worked well. But now I am starting to see youtube ads pop back up.
Anyone know why this is?
- coderintherye 3y agoCheck if your ublock origin install is corrupted. This happened to me the other day. There should be an option to "repair" it on the plugin page and that should hopefully work.
- LinuxBender 3y agoAdding to this make sure google/gstatic are not trusted to run Javascript. I have seen ads bypass uBlock and NoScript recently if google is trusted. This seems to be one place they are inserting their A/B testing. Even then I sometimes have to refresh a livestream where an ad would have been inserted or it will hang.
- pmontra 3y agoI blocked google and gstatic both in uMatrix and uBO but I'm still getting ads in YouTube. They started to appear a few days ago. It's much worse than TV. I'm probably switching to some alternative interface as I did on my phone. Actually, I don't know if I blocked them correctly in uBO. I use uMatrix for those kind of stuff because uBO's matrix is almost impossible to understand with those +++ and ---.

- JumpinJack_Cash 3y agoGoogle Chrome disabled adblocker because it believes it has malware. Just had this pop up 10 mins ago.

I believe they don't always do it, they just fail every now and then for different people. There's been few of these news posts recently though.
- BorisMelnik 3y agothere has been a large initiative recently for YouTube to stop playing nicely with adblockers. I'm begrudgingly paying for yt premium
