- PaulHoule 3y agoDoesn't have to fight with unions either. The UAW really is one of the best unions in the world but there is no way they are going to let Detroit have a revolution in how they make cars.
- labrador 3y agoThis doesn't make sense to me. Surely the average union member understands that if they don't let the company they work for innovate, even if it means fewer jobs, that their company won't remain competitive and they will be out of a job.
- PaulHoule 3y agoThe UAW vacillates between nourishing and devouring its host. It’s really more complex than that because it is more than a two body problem. Automakers can recruit the UAW to help them get what they want from Democrats and the other way around for the Republicans, who the auto workers vote for anyway. Big business and big labor are a powerful combination when it comes to getting protectionism and everything else they want. Look at how small, affordable cars have disappeared from the market since the two of them convinced US lawmakers they need profits now so they can make more profits now from super-luxury XXXL electrics.
- two_handfuls 3y agoYou say the auto workers vote republican. That may have been true, but surely by now only the women- and minority-hating among them still vote republican.
- PaulHoule 3y agoGoes back and forth, Before Reagan southern whites always voted Democrat because of Lincoln and blacks always voted Republican because of Lincoln but now it is the other way around, That’s why they call it a revolution. The current alignment will change. Phillip Bump points out that soon there won’t be enough white people for the Republican’s strategy to be tenable, some black guy on 538 was saying the other day that the levels of minority voting for the Democrats are not sustainable. Those are compatible of course because both parties will be different in 20 years if not 10.
- labrador 3y ago> The UAW vacillates between nourishing and devouring its host That makes sense because, as an American, it seems consistent with Americans not always voting for their own interests
- PaulHoule 3y agoTheir interest isn’t simple. They want more of the pie but they also want there to be a pie.
