GitHub alienates developers by force feeding them AI recommendations
- lawlessone 3y agoSeems to be a theme for 2023: A company strongly dependent on the good will of its users does a thing. The users strongly reject the thing Company keeps doing the thing Consequences
- prepend 3y agoI use GitHub every day. I’ve never used the “feed” for anything. I don’t think Ive ever seen a recommendation for anything. Who uses this? Are people discovering projects through GitHub? I typically find them through other sites that just direct link. Or mostly from colleagues as we have several hundred repos in my org. This seems like a horrible feature GitHub added, but seems easy to avoid.
- nine_zeros 3y agoGithub is going through the same enshittification as many other tech companies. Features are being made so that management can show their team is up to something useful.
- eindiran 3y agoAgreed. The good news is that so far most (all?) of the enshittification-oriented changes have been easy to ignore. Gamified badges? Who cares, I never look at the profile any way. Feed of bullshit recommendations? Who cares, I never look at it. Now, it probably is still a bad thing, but as a daily GH user, it hasn't impacted me much so far.
- xinayder 3y agoI used the feed to check projects people I follow are starring or contributing to. I used the Explore tab to find new and interesting repositories.
- nativeit 3y ago> "When we launched the latest version of your feed on September 6, 2023, we made changes to the underlying technology of the feed in order to improve overall platform performance," the biz explained in a post on Tuesday. > "As a result, we removed the functionality for 'push events for repositories a user is subscribed to'. We don’t take these changes lightly, but as our community continues to grow tremendously, we have to prioritize our availability, user experience, and performance." —- I’ve found that not bothering with behavioral algorithms that attempt to determine users’ granular interests is very performant on my own servers. The absence of superfluous data mining is nearly 100% transparent to my overall system load. Maybe that’s an alternative to explore?
- egberts1 3y agoUh? How is this AI thingie different from Github Explore? https://github.com/explore https://github.com/explore What is the real URL for Github Feed?
