5: And Done: No One Wants to Schmooze After Work
- version_five 3y agoDepends on the job. My first job out of university was mostly older people (mid 30s+) and there was no socializing. It sucked for me, in a new city with few friends, I would have been happy to go out for beers or whatever. A later job, many of us were single, new in the city, and had lots of after work social time. Now personally I'd still be happy to go for beers after work but I have a family so it's not really possible and I've become the lame older person. Anyway, all that to say, it's good to work with some people at a similar life stage so then you can be social or not without worry.
- momirlan 3y agoabsolutely. my first job arriving in Toronto was with a bunch of 30 year olds who couldn't stop socializing. we were schmoozing before work, at work, and after work. government job, no kids (them, not me), great fun. we are still in touch after 20 odd years.
- nullindividual 3y agoThis is difficult when you know you face a 45-60+ minute commute and for those of us in the north, you know it will be dark, sometimes before you get off of work. And then for those of us who work from home 45-60+ minutes away from work, why do I want to go back into town at 5? And finally, some of us have 'had it' and "5:01 and done" is exactly that. Put up a firm boundary between work life/work people, and home. AND THEN there are those office workers who set these "fun" activities up, worse yet during work hours and "mandatory" who don't realize they're dealing with neuroatypicals who completely stress out about "fun" office "games" and dread the entire concept. That last one was perhaps a side rant :-)
