It is incredibly cheap to store data and regulations are ineffective or non-existent. Of course data collection will run wild and be abused.
Change any of these factors and the problem solves itself:
- More expensive storage media.
- Remove the value that can be extracted from data (eg. nerfing the advertisment based business model)
- Bigger consequences for mishandling data (eg. fines >100% or prison sentences for responsible leadership would be a good start).
- Increased probability of experiencing consequences in the first place (eg. more effective enforcement of regulations).
Effectively these are the levers that you can push on. 1,2 and 4 seem difficult to move much, which leaves 3.
- edgyquant 3y agoThe only one of these that will actually fix the problems is prison sentences (and increased probability of getting said sentences.) It’s the same with malicious spammers, why would they ever stop when the consequences are basically nothing.
- teeray 3y agoAlso, fines are an abstract punishment—even more so when applied to a business. The C-suites need to start evaluating decisions knowing their personal freedom is at stake—not a number on a balance sheet.
