I wonder why they chose to implement the LiteFS as Fuse module, instead of simply hacking SQlite to intercept the IO operations before they go through to the OS. Yes it would require a patch and a recompile, but performance would be superior by not having to go through the kernel and Fuse, and there would be fewer moving parts.

LiteFS works this way so that its users can use the unmodified SQLite libraries they'd normally use.
