Rogue Russian pilot tried to shoot down RAF aircraft in 2022
- Someone 3y agoFTA: “A Russian pilot tried to shoot down an RAF surveillance plane after believing he had permission to fire, the BBC has learned. […] As the two Russian SU-27s approached the RAF spy plane, they received a communication from their ground station controller. One western source told the BBC the words they received were to the effect of "you have the target". This ambiguous language was interpreted by one of the Russian pilots as permission to fire.” I wouldn’t call that rogue.
- foldr 3y agoIf you think about the context it's a pretty apt description. The pilot knows that the UK and Russia aren't at war and that for Russia to shoot down an RAF plane would be an extraordinary escalation. To continue without very clear and unambiguous authorization in those circumstances seems like an action that ought to get you kicked very firmly out of any self-respecting military organization. Especially given that he fired a second missile despite the other pilot's protests.
