Why Venice will charge tourists to enter
- mytailorisrich 3y ago5 euros for the day is nothing. Maybe it is just a first step and the fee will increase in the future but at the moment this won't dent the number of visitors at all.
- beardyw 3y agoPerhaps it will mitigate the problems caused. I am not sure making it exclusive would be good for Venice. It is not a theme park.
- simonebrunozzi 3y agoI live in Venice. I think you are right. However, even letting a rule like this pass in the City Council was not a small feat. The hardest part is exactly this, finding a legal instrument that can allow the City of Venice to handle things in a special way. I am in favor of a "too crowded" tax, as long as it's implemented in an easy way (e.g. being able to quickly pay by phone and/or with an app), and that the cost can rise depending on how crowded the city becomes. I think that a tax in the order of "tens of Euros" would probably make a dent. Venice can see peaks of more than 100,000 tourists in a single day (the city itself has less than 50,000 inhabitants, including me and my wife); the majority of them come for a quick selfie in Rialto or St.Mark's square, buy some cheap stuff from ugly shops (probably cheaply produced somewhere in Asia), and then go away. Something like 30 or 40 euros would deter at least some of them, IMHO. They don't really enjoy what Venice can offer, and make everyone else's experience, including that of local residents, miserable at times.
