AFAIK the iPhone only allows pseudo background processes (http://www.iphonebuzz.com/new-iphone-sdk-allows-pseudo-background-processes-252458.php http://www.iphonebuzz.com/new-iphone-sdk-allows-pseudo-backg...), so the app would have to be running when you leave work.
