I sometimes wonder if I am living on the same planet as other people.
- kube-system 3y agoIf your home has a personal computer in it, you are in the minority on this planet.
- kalupa 3y agodoes "personal computer" also overlap with what we still call "phone"?
- dylan604 3y agoi would say someone's phone/mobile/device is even more personal than say the family's home computer.
- kube-system 3y agoA pacemaker is also very personal, and a computer, but that doesn't make it a "personal computer". Words strung together sometimes mean different things than they do in isolation.
- dylan604 3y agoAre you saying that in 2023 that the device is not someone's personal computer because of semantics rather than it is what it is? There are so many people where their only form of compute at home is their device(s). In what way is a mobile device not considered a computer? It just happens to have an extra radio device and a phone app. What can a person with only a phone not do in your opinion that this preconceived notion in form factor of a personal computer cannot do?
- kube-system 3y agoI was using the industry standard definition of "personal computer" above, as it is the definition that is used for those statistics. If you're getting caught up on the terminology, pretend I did: s/personal computer/laptop or desktop/g
- dylan604 3y agoright, so if you're willing to do that, why not s/personal computer/(mobile device|laptop|desktop)/g
- kube-system 3y agoBecause that is not what the statistic I cited above refers to, so it would be inaccurate to do so.
- kube-system 3y agoAbout 7/10ths of the world has a phone in the traditional sense. The number of people who have a phone that accesses the internet was projected to reach surpass 50% somewhat recently. (It was 43% in 2017)
