> The IRS said Friday it is ramping up a crackdown on wealthy taxpayers who owe back taxes, noting that the effort springs from billions in new funding through the Inflation Reduction Act partially designed to help it track down millionaire tax cheats.
The good news for the rest of us is this is good news.
The bad news is, we have to pay for it and we didn't have to. The IRS has had the resources. What it lacked is the priorities. That is, why is the agency tracking down taxpayers with a fraction of $250k+ due when they could use the same people hours (e.g.) to put a lean on the home of a much bigger fish? Is the lean process that different?
The fear should be, once these new agents catch up on the load and they run out of millionaires to pursue then what? The IRS is going to downsize? That's unlikely. So while this is a positive for the sub-millionaire masses in the short-term...be careful what you wish for punters.
