Way back when PacBell/SBC/AT&T had me on a (digital) multiplexer which meant no 56k and no DSL. 33.6 was fine, and after the multiplexer was removed ADSL2 up to about 4 Mbps down (because the only ILEC out here to invest in infrastructure was GTE/Verizon).
