Google pledges $20M for responsible AI fund
- zeroq 3y agoI can add another 20 cents to the fund, and it will be bigger commitement from my side.
- jfghi 3y ago“Pledge” another 20 cents
- version_five 3y agoYes they have lots of money. So what is the right amount for them to put in this fund then?
- clankyclanker 3y agoAbout a dozen years ago, folks estimated that G made about $100M/day from AdWords. That number has probably kept pace with inflation, but even if it hasn’t, they’re committing at most about a fifth of day’s income, per year, or 1/1500th of their annual income. I, too, would like to receive good press for donating less than 0.06% of my income! Tithing comes to mind. If they wanted to put any force and meaning behind those words, they’d just hire Gebru on as a consultant and then I wouldn’t even care about whether they were buying friendly research articles at $2M each.
- Tao3300 3y agoVerily I say unto you, that this poor commentator hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury.
- atlasunshrugged 3y agoSeems like a pretty lowball amount given the amount of funding they're investing into commercialization -- pretty sure they put $300M into just an investment in Anthropic.

- RcouF1uZ4gsC 3y ago> will "support researchers, organize convenings and foster debate on public policy solutions to encourage the responsible development of AI." Basically a group of people getting together to advocate for censorship and regulatory capture.
- mistrial9 3y agobetter to followup and read what they do produce, than to pronounce judgement. What you say is certainly possible IMO
- pixl97 3y agoIn black and white world, yes. Unfortunately we live in shades of grey world where giving corporations unlimited power to do whatever they want is also dangerous.
- crop_rotation 3y agoThe main question is, responsible to "whom".
- gustavus 3y ago> Among the first recipients are: the Aspen Institute, Brookings Institution, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Center for a New American Security, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Institute for Security and Technology, MIT Work of the Future, R Street and SeedAI. Anyone have any information for who these people are or what their track record is, because some of those names seem rather ominous in a a "Ministry of Love" naming sort of way.
- TechBro8615 3y agoMost of them are "think tanks," which is a fancy word for "lobbyist."

- jcampbell1 3y agoGoogle writes a check for $20m to pay high salaries to DC swamp creatures so they can write political position papers that benefit Google in some way. Google gets positive press for what is dubious at best.
- badrequest 3y ago"Google gives lobbying firms $20M to make boogeymen out of the independent development of AI models"
- karaterobot 3y agoYep, that should do it.
- MetaMalone 3y agoLeave it to Google to find a “responsible” AI
- Tao3300 3y ago"Yes we would like to be responsible for it."
- fallingmeat 3y agoin other news, local man rounds up on grocery bill for charity
- Tao3300 3y agoI only do this if it's under $.50 and I found everything I was looking for. Something about donating to the food bank seemed off in the early pandemic when I was picking over the last scrawny beef knuckles when I was supposed to buy ground turkey. I might be traumatized and a bad person. Either way that's my rule and I keep a backup wholesale package of SPAM on hand for the next supply chain collapse.

- 1234letshaveatw 3y agothey should start off with a catchy motto, like “don't be evil”
- matthewdgreen 3y agoDidn’t we already do this once, with OpenAI? How did that go.
- Nasrudith 3y agoI cannot help but think that this "responsible AI" craze will be looked upon in the future as an idiotic mass panic along the lines of the Satanic Panics and literal apocalyptic Y2K predictions. Instead of potential mass inconveniences like airlines shutting down.
- scrum-treats 3y agoIs this a tax write off?
