Has to be pretty embarrassing for the Edge developers that something they've worked on is mostly known as a punchline or an annoyance shoved down people's throats, rather than a product that can stand and compete on its own two feet.
- offices 3y agoAnd the strategy of your employers implies that your work to improve the product doesn't actually matter, only tricking customers into becoming users does. There can be no discussion about the relative quality of Edge without this subject in the foreground. The only word-of-mouth is from the tricked users who don't know the difference and just see it as the button for the internet. It doesn't matter if you introduce a regression that makes it slower, they'll just blame it on the 'wifi'.
- smcl 3y agoPrecisely. It totally undermines their engineering efforts. There are people I know who use Edge willingly, and their anecdotal claims are that it has reduced resource usage over Chrome (somehow, which is weird since it's using the same engine). It was also used by a few in the Geoguessr community for a while since it didn't hit some annoying Google Street View bug that Chrome did.
- nobodyandproud 3y agoI used Edge 2 for some time as a replacement for Chrome; I dumped Edge for Firefox once it became a hostile experience. The AI integration is what put me off completely.
- smcl 3y agoThat's fair enough. I'm personally a Firefox user and I suggest my friends use it too.
- nobodyandproud 3y agoAfter using Chrome (counting Edge v2 as Chrome) for years, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the revamped Firefox is so it stuck. Otherwise I would've reverted back to Google Chrome.
- layer8 3y agoIt was already embarrassing that they had to give up on their own engine and had to adopt Chromium.
- snarfy 3y agoChrome has its own bullshit. When Edge decided to switch to being based on Chromium I had high hopes Microsoft could build a better Chrome than Google could. Man, what a letdown.
- adabyron 3y agoThis is the best take. Edge is a really good browser. It could use better privacy protection but it seems Microsoft & Bing want to make money off ads more than protect users privacy. It has really good reader mode & read aloud features. I prefer it over Chrome. Firefox, Brave & other browsers have features that make them the right tool for the right job in other areas. Microsoft is killing their good will & I question what they're getting for it. They're also disrespecting their employees who've put in work to make Edge a great browser.

- notquiteright 3y agoIt would have been great if they just made a perfect, de-googled version of Chrome with extra features. Instead, they violate your privacy more than Google ever dreamed.
