No disclosure that you work for a competitor?

- mooreds 3y agoHiya. I am not aware of any HN guidelines about disclosure[0]. If there are, please share and I'll comply with them. I personally choose disclose where I work in the following ways: * I have my employer in my HN profile * I have my employer on my linkedin page, which is mentioned in my profile * If I am commenting on a topic in a space related to my employer's interests, I share that at the top of my comment. TBH, I'm not 100% good about that, sometimes I've disclosed at the bottom or mid-comment, or forgotten. But that's my goal. I post a lot of stuff (10k+ posts), some of it around identity/in the space of my employer (which, for anyone who doesn't want to click through to my profile, is FusionAuth). I haven't felt the need to disclose for a post, nor have I seen this request before. I know this is a post discussing some of Okta's security difficulties, but I've also posted links to Okta documentation[1] that I thought would be interesting to the HN community, so it's not like I'm doing a hatchet job. Do you disclose that you are a former Okta employee on every post related to the topic of identity? (I was able to discover this with a brief internet search.) I wouldn't expect you to do so. 0: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html 1: https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=okta.com https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=okta.com
- SkyPuncher 3y agoIt’s an implicit guideline. Basically, you loose a lot of credibility when this exact situation pans out. In this case, the article feels like a direct attack on a competitor- which feels slimy.
- mooreds 3y agoThanks for the feedback Skypuncher. I appreciate it.
- gabrielsroka 3y ago> Please don't use HN primarily for promotion. It's ok to post your own stuff part of the time, but the primary use of the site should be for curiosity. From [0]
- mooreds 3y agoSure, 100% agree with this. I believe I don't use it primarily for promotion (I keep self-promotion to 5-10% of my posts).
- gabrielsroka 3y agoAnd you proved my point perfectly. I asked dang about this years ago. I said it would be super easy to game by just creating 10 times as much fluff.
- mooreds 3y agoI hope I don't post 90% fluff :) .
