TFA lists various ways use of a non-MFi charger could have. The greatest is simply the FUD perception of incompatibility being total rather than partial which seems to be working based on revenue from MFi chargers.
Apple is the new MS and doing it better: embrace, extend, profit.

But (1) as I say, we collectively have several years of experience with this, and (2) this is an anonymous "leaker" via Forbes, who I don't have a ton of respect for. https://www.niemanlab.org/2022/02/an-incomplete-history-of-forbes-com-as-a-platform-for-scams-grift-and-bad-journalism/ https://www.niemanlab.org/2022/02/an-incomplete-history-of-f... I think Apple will promote the use of MFi chargers/cables for pragmatic reasons — they eliminate risk, guarantee the best possible user experience, and reduce support costs simply by ensuring that they correctly support USB-C/USB 4.
