I went to LAN party where everyone had lugged their CRTs, except one kid who had a 15” TFT LCD screen, which were super rare and expensive at the time. It had a huge crack right down the center, but was still just about usable. I asked him how that happened. He said he was playing online (Counterstrike I think?) and lost a match, causing him to punch the screen in frustration.
That screen must have cost >$1000 at the time.
Sure enough, the guy was a tool - the kind of gamer that gloats over every win and questions the opponent’s sexuality after every loss. And he was every bit as toxic right there in the room with us.
The experience completely put me off online versus-stranger gaming forever, and in retrospect I’m very grateful to him for this.
- HellDunkel 3y agoKudos! You saved yourself from a ton of nonsense. I myself had a similar reaction when at my last LAN party (age 18) i got motion sick and also caught a flue. It stopped me from playing video games for 15 years. Lucky me.
- k__ 3y agoHaha, I had a 17" TFT in 2000. Was at a 600 people LAN and only one other dude had one.
- stavros 3y agoDid it have a huge crack down the center?
- k__ 3y agoHaha, no. It didn't have any issues ever. In fact, I found another one (same model) 10 years later on the streets and used the two for a ther 2 years, until I bought two 27" displays when I finally got a real job. Those things were build for eternity.
- tjoff 3y agoEven better, bad ghosting and maybe bad delay made them terrible for gaming. Took quite a while before LCDs were viable for anything but office-work.
- Mistletoe 3y agoAh XxX_420_Slayer69_420_XxX from Xbox Live out in the wild before moving online.
