Occidental's first DAC facility has a goal of removing 1 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere per year.
Global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and industry were 37.12 billion metric tons (GtCO₂) in 2021
So we'd only need about 38,000 of these plants to remove the carbon we release into the atmosphere every year.
Then there's also the over 2 trillion tons of CO2 we've already released that's currently overheating the planet.
- hedora 3y agoThe main problem is that it’s unclear if these plants are carbon negative. They’re displacing liquid oil with an equal volume of compressed CO2 gas, so I’m guessing they are emitting way more carbon than they are capturing.
- Aerroon 3y agoNet negative carbon emissions requires money. Somebody will have to pay a lot of money to capture and sequester that carbon. Their plan is to have the oil pay for it, but eventually it will have to be us. Their solution doesn't solve the problem, but it's a step on the path towards a solution.
- oezi 3y agoI found the napkin math for getting green hydrogen to 1 USD per kg pretty interesting. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37155241 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37155241 The primary assumption is that solar energy is going to be almost free within a decade because we will massively overprovision it to balance yearly variation. Then you need to find a cheap industrial process which uses electricty to do something which has a positive climate impact.
