If the variable is numeric, and const or constexpr, and you have -O1 or higher enabled, then the compiler will optimize it away. I don’t think static would add anything under these conditions.

Won't the compiler optimize it away even without constexpr or const? The compiler can see it doesn't get changed.

  It should. But const or constexpr also work as documentation.
