It’s good that this classic has been resurfaced by its stylistic cameo in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — a movie which has a lot to admire, but tries so extremely hard to be clever and likable that it just fell completely flat for me.
I watched it twice, and both times I just found myself wishing I was watching “In the Mood for Love” instead when the multiverse kaleidoscope spun that way.
- fasterik 3y agoAgreed. Everything Everywhere had a lot of style and the potential to be a great film, but it got bogged down in unfunny gags and sentimental cliches. Tár deserved to win best picture, in my opinion.
- CharlesW 3y ago> Everything Everywhere had a lot of style and the potential to be a great film… "Great" is subjective. We all experience art through our own lens, and for me it was magic. I'm glad that, sometimes, Weird Shit™ like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Swiss Army Man, etc. can somehow make it through a system that abhors risk.
- bluepizza 3y agoTár was subtly layered. I saw several people discussing it as if it was about "the separation of art and artist", when the film spent several minutes explaining how much of a talentless phony she was. EEAAT was much easier to digest. The message was embedded and one doesn't need to reflect on it, and make decisions about it.

- bluepizza 3y agoPlease expand, don't leave me hanging.
- majormajor 3y ago"Clever," for sure, but it's hard for me to square your claim of "tries so extremely hard to be likable" with people getting bludgeoned with dildos or jumping on buttplugs or bagel black holes... Those are all bold choices and the opposite of playing it safe for general likeability.
