Future Marshal of the Soviet Union Zhukov was a cavalry man in the Tsarist Army during WW1 (he got injured somewhere in Eastern Transylvania while riding his horse at some point) and in the inter-war period he served in a cavalry unit in Izyum (or close to it), a city known today because of its vicinity to the Ukrainian - Russian front. He had a love of horses throughout his career, which probably explains this famous victory parade photo. [1]
Of course, at some point during the WW2 Eastern Campaign horse-traction became very important, especially for the Germans (hard to do logistics beyond the Don river when there’s no railway nearby).
I have a feeling that at some point in the future (when the oil will have run out, for example) we’ll get back to horse-assisted warfare.
