Blue gum is one of the fastest growing trees in the world. I understand exactly why someone would export it, because it's a wildly productive pulp tree under the right conditions. Obviously there are significant negative externalities, and when it spreads in the wild and sets the countryside on fire every summer governments might regret allowing anyone to plant it, but that doesn't make putting in a blue gum plantation any less tempting.
