BYD Is Coming for the World
- ggm 3y agoThere's been quite a bit of chatter on various forums about adding and dropping the (b)uild (y)our (d)reams slogan. I believe the company's Chinese ideograms reflect the Yi/Di of its first factory location, combine with B from the founders name. Marketing division came up with the slogan and back claimed the acronyms and then they have free PR as people argue both about the slogan and now it's removal. There's even a website on how to remove the letters with a heat gun and dental floss, and the anagrams you can make to reapply them. BYD are attacking the EV market segment Tesla can't yet pitch to, cheaper, but highly attractive to less wealthy car owners. Range is less, there's no autopilot, it's a car. It's selling well in Australia. MG are also in this space. Very cheap vehicle for it's size and also EV choices. All the European EV makers are hoping to get Tesla market share and ignore cheap. These Chinese makers are going cheap and volume. It will be interesting to see what happens (Urban driving has less range anxiety, lower effective range doesn't matter as much for small car short run owners. The real problem is lack of charging in apartment complexes, and on streets. Europe is doing better in that space)
