I always like applying statistical theory to things like estimating true average ratings (Bayesian weighted), and logarithms to scores that increase exponentially. Applying suitable functions to transform values is just a great way to fine-tune the measures we use in our sites and give exactly the sort of behavior we want. Thanks for a great link.
