Prosperity and Precarity in Imperial Russia's Long Nineteenth Century
- AlbertCory 3y ago"the long nineteenth century" A phrase used over and over. Reminds me of an old George Carlin joke: "Mathematicians have just discovered a new number. The number is called "bleen." Bleen is reportedly between 6 and 7." New discovery: the nineteenth century was more than 100 years! The more you know.
- throw_pm23 3y agoDo you ever say "a long day"?
- mikhailfranco 3y agoIt is not explained and the footnote is not helpful. Here is the European and Russian explanation as 1789-1914: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_nineteenth_century https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_nineteenth_century In Britain, it is not long, but slightly shifted, to mean 1815-1914, roughly the Pax Britannica: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pax_Britannica https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pax_Britannica In similar fashion, the 20th century is often represented as short, meaning from the Russian Revolution or WWI to the fall of the Soviet Union 1914/18-1989/91: https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3769095 https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3769095
- lainga 3y agoFor context the "long nineteenth" is usually defined as 1789 - 1914, what Anglo-Americans might think of as "Victorian" but encompassing a lot more
- fakedang 3y agoAn easy way to look at it might be the combination of the Napoleonic, Bismarckian and Victorian eras.
- AlbertCory 3y agoI guess it would be uncool for a scholar to say "the long nineteenth century (conventionally defined as 1789-1914)," ?
- ogurechny 3y agoWikipedia article for Chikino states that the pedestal for the monument commemorating the visit of Alexander II was later used for the monument of Karl Marx, then for the monument of Stalin (neither of those two fellows ever visited the place, as far as I know). Quite a convenient object, now in the need of some stucco. https://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=59.322730&lon=29.843738&z=16&m=w&show=/33725689/ru/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%B5%D0%BD%D1%82 https://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=59.322730&lon=29.843738&z...
