Edited because I didn’t read. I don’t have a good solution, so here’s a bad one in hopes that someone will correct me. You may consider deliberately causing a thermal runaway in a safe area with concrete then dumping sand on it. This would at least remove the explosive danger when you eventually dump it in the trash.
