I'm honestly surprised how brazenly they are doing exactly the thing they had 10 years of legal trauma from previously again. I mean, something different, sure.

I'm honestly surprised how brazenly they are doing exactly the thing they had 10 years of legal trauma from previously again. I mean, something different, sure. But exactly the same thing????!
- cmarschner 3y agoIt‘s basically a 100% different workforce working on these things now…
- jiofj 3y agoThey don't have a monopoly anymore.
- MattPalmer1086 3y agoAre you sure about that? Last time I checked, Windows was still very much the dominant desktop operating system.
- diffeomorphism 3y agohttps://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/europe https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/europe 77.5% is definitely a "dominant market position". That is the term that matters, people just like to use the word monopoly instead (note: if lots of people use a word "incorrectly" the meaning of the word changes).
- cyanydeez 3y agoThe way I've understood current enforcement is that what matters is "proof" of detriment to the consumer.
- diffeomorphism 3y agoThat differs between the US and Europe. The legal issue is abuse of dominant market position (just having the position is, of course, legal). The EU cares about any "detriment" for customers, competitors, employees,... . That used to be the case in the US as well, but over the last decades they switched to caring only about a specific niche and generally doing very, very little. End result: Lots of big, successful companies that do shady things and only the EU intervenes and then is the bad guy. Look at any of the threads about fines for Facebook or the like and you will find many replies to the effect of "The EU is just jealous and should not fine successful American companies".
- cyanydeez 3y agoI'm not talking about the laws, but enforcement. America has the same laws, basically, as when Microsoft was found guilty.
- pjc50 3y agoIf you keep trying the illegal thing, maybe you'll get lucky and be allowed to do it.
- asu_thomas 3y agoTech companies in the US have significantly more lobbying power now. Microsoft will be fine. HN is amazingly ignorant and about political economy.
- grotorea 3y agoEveryone else seems to be allowed to do it, so they might as well try again.
- lakomen 3y agoThey even force TCPA, sorry, TPM. The thing we fought so hard against 20some years ago. 20 years later they just do it again, and no one protested. No one.
- lenkite 3y agoThe world has changed - everyone does it nowadays and gets away with it so MS can do it too.
- cyanydeez 3y agoJust assume there's a spreadsheet prepared by a lawyer, engineer, accountant and executive who directly calculated the value.
- callalex 3y agoWestern democracy has been successfully subverted by capital, and they know it. Now the screw-tightening begins.
