Artificial Consciousness Remains Impossible
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- allears 3y agoThis is an excellent essay that says better than I could why AI is not, and will never be, "conscious" in the way that a human is conscious.
- thfuran 3y agoIn what way is a human conscious that a complete quantum simulation of that human and their local environment wouldn't be?
- turtleyacht 3y agoReality is Time in one direction which Consciousness collapsed
- baggy_trough 3y agoBad argument because you can say the same exact thing about neurons in the brain.
- allears 3y agoNope. Nobody is "programming" neurons. And anyway, nobody so far has explained how neurons firing leads to consciousness.
- SenAnder 3y agoSo what? Neurons can be simulated with computers, from which it follows so can a human-like mind. Unless you propose a non-physical source of consciousness.
- allears 3y agoNo, I don't think that follows. The current model of neurons firing, even if it can be simulated by a computer, does not explain consciousness. Whether the source of consciousness is non-physical, or whether there is some physical explanation, is something we don't know yet.
- ftxbro 3y ago> The current model of neurons firing, even if it can be simulated by a computer, does not explain consciousness. what if it does tho. what if consciousness is a collective phenomenon like how fluid dynamics is different from the quantum chemistry of a single water molecule
- SenAnder 3y agoIf consciousness is non-physical (i.e. magic), then yes, all bets are off. But if it is physical, then we don't need an explanation to create it, any more than cavemen needed to know chemistry to cook meat over a fire.
- ftxbro 3y agohonestly they aren't really 'programming' the base models of those llms either. they have a pretty bland architecture and everything else emerges from there from its training data (as much text as they could find). that's separate from the rlhf they do afterwards in 'finishing school' that makes it say things like 'as an ai language model...'. > And anyway, nobody so far has explained how neurons firing leads to consciousness. that's cool but idk how that relates to your point, unless you are proposing the neurons are magic like they are antennas for the will of god or like they really work by quantum effects that cause consciousness and are beyond the reach of our science and technology.
