Or use Notepad++ on Windows and Geany/Nano/whatever on Linux. Yes, Nano is quite good. I would rather learn to use Vim, than adapt to Emacs. Vim at least doesn

I would rather learn to use Vim, than adapt to Emacs. Vim at least doesn't pretend that it is a normal text editor.
