US style tariff barriers might be the only way to prevent the dominance of China NEV in the UK - this is the Toyota / Nissan in the 80's moment or Honda moment in the 90's. The cars are significantly cheaper, easier to maintain and 'good enough' for consumers increasingly sensitive to cost of living (generally don't care about geopolitics, which is an intellectual hobby).
That said, UK does not have a domestic car industry anymore so will have import NEV's from somewhere, or (more likely) do JV's with China car manufacturers, with local marques for local markets (i.e Polestar)
- mytailorisrich 3y agoThe UK has car factories and produced 775k cars last year. But 99% of the production is by foreign-owned companies (BMW, Nissan, Honda, etc). The problem Europe has with EVs is that the local manufacturers were slow and late while, say, Chinese ones bet it all on EV quite early and China especially bet early on batteries. Today even the Tesla gigafactory in Berlin uses some Chinese batteries (BYD).
- Zigurd 3y agoThe 1980s Toyota moment came because the 1970s crap metallurgy in Japanese car bodies got mostly sorted out. I expect the first wave of China EVs to have plenty of issues. Though they will improve fast, but I would not buy just yet.
