How Worried Should We Be About AI’s Threat to Humanity?

- anjel 3y agohttps://ghostarchive.org/archive/VsBhm https://ghostarchive.org/archive/VsBhm I gave up trying after the third captcha and put it through rival archive site instead, captcha-free: https://ghostarchive.org/archive/VsBhm https://ghostarchive.org/archive/VsBhm

- ftxbro 3y agothese kinds of articles are usually cringey but this one was pretty good. it doesn't have the usual smug subtext like of course ai isn't an existential threat
- ggm 3y agoThe threat model really depends on how strongly you mean "existential" -if its hyperbole and its just "risk" then there's heaps of risk potential in non-AGI, misapplied LLM/GPT AI outcomes. Search "robodebt Australia" and weep. Reliance on "the machine said so" by government bodies under pressure to deliver a specific outcome is the Nuremberg defence of our times. Since I don't believe AGI is on the horizon, I can answer the non-hyperbolic "existential" as no, it's not. But, if you want to end the species, continuing to be dumb about AGW is definitely the way to go, and it's only one letter off AGI. Wake up sheeple! spelling matters! AGW is an existential risk (not joking)
- Vecr 3y agoWhat's AGW? I want to say Anthropogenic Global Warming, but it might be something else, BMD related?
- RamblingCTO 3y agoanthropological global warming maybe?
- hcfman 3y agoAustralia, robodebt, The Netherlands, "de Toeslagen affaire" or the scandal where automated evaluation techniques wrongly categorised people as committers of benefit fraud. It took more than 25,000 victims and one pitbull politician to get the government to stop destroying peoples lives. And the emcumbants in the government tried to side line the "trouble maker" politician standing up for the people.
- arisAlexis 3y agoJust tell anyone non tech related: hey we are building something smarter than us and we haven't found a way to control it yet. Like, what do you think?
- gumballindie 3y agoMost people, even tech savvy people, will think that’s a crazy statement. And rightfully so.
- arisAlexis 3y agoActually, the inventors of the technology including Hinton and Bengio along with all the heads of the leading tech labs think this is not only not crazy but plausible and imminent. I am talking about Hassabis and CEO of Anthropic and Ilya Sutskever. Not to mention other inferior humans like Hawking. Read on please. It's your kids future.
- gumballindie 3y agoNo doubt AI is a powerful software tool. But as with any tool the level of danger is determined by those who control it and their motives. Naturally, if humans owners make it do bad stuff it will do bad stuff. Even a calculator or a kitchen tissue can do bad stuff in the wrong hands. Anthropomorphizing this type of non deterministic software ridicules their work a little bit because it shows the sleaziness of their marketing campaign in wanting to promote the product, all of which is centered around fear and theft. Usually that results in a well deserved backlash coming from those whom they want to hurt.
- arisAlexis 3y agoA higher intelligent AGI with specific goals can destroy humanity and that is precisly what Bengio (highest h-indez software scientist currently) describes in this blog post: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://yoshuabengio.org/2023/05/22/how-rogue-ais-may-arise https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=8997844...
