Russia Is Using Tires to Protect Its Bombers from Aerial Attack
- ggm 3y agoI suspect it will work within limits against single drone attack and will be less helpful for multiple drop, multiple drone attacks. As the article says: Tires burn.
- verdverm 3y agoThe tire story has not been confirmed, someone took the satellite image and added a "zoomed in panel of the tires" Quite likely it's just misinformation or propaganda, the more likely explanation is paint experiments to affect visual perception. We've seen this on Russian aviation in higher quality images, and it has been used throughout history, some cool examples out there

- _kbh_ 3y agoHere’s a link to a more full capture hi resolution image looks like tires to me. https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1699168108148089169?s=20 https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1699168108148089169?s=20
- verdverm 3y agothey look "circular", there is no way to know what they are though. However, if you zoom in, you can "clearly" see that there is wide variation in the shapes and most are not circular like a tire, lots of artifacts in the image. feel free to see tires in that image though! I will remain unconvinced of any statement that claims they know what they are based on images like that, we need a photo not from space, or of US military grade resolution

- 1letterunixname 3y agoIneffectual and counterproductive to operational readiness. The only thing that can protect aircraft completely would be hardened bunkers, but even a simple hangar might be better than what is likely an arbitrary order from a Russian officer. They just helped Ukraine by tying up their bombers on the ground and covering them in what is essentially solid rocket fuel. Light one tire, and nothing will be able to stop the inferno. All Ukrainian forces have to do now is deliver incendiary payloads such as white phosphorus, magnesium, or thermite.
- TheLoafOfBread 3y ago> thing that can protect aircraft completely would be hardened bunkers, but even a simple hangar might be better Well I guess that Russians even don't have those hangars, or those hangars weren't maintained for so long, that it is more safe to risk a drone attack than risk random pieces of hangar falling on the plane. Getting back to Russia and maintenance.
