Kagi's really good. It's like 2015ish Google (slight exaggeration, but close-ish). For my niche technical project it returns results where google doesn't. A customizable or more focusable/transparent search engine could be worth paying for. The deeper problem is the content of websites isn't really improving, I suspect.
