- pjmlp 3y agoI strongly advise the history of C, where he acknowledges some of its gotchas, and why lint was created to help catching them. Many keep thinking they know better than C's authors.
- porridgeraisin 3y agoI can't find this book. Can you link me to it?
- ricardo81 3y agoNot OP but I think this may be it https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/234286.1057834 https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/234286.1057834 Found via searching for quoted text in http://csapp.cs.cmu.edu/3e/docs/chistory.html http://csapp.cs.cmu.edu/3e/docs/chistory.html
- pjmlp 3y agoIt is linked from the page, and isn't a book. http://cm.bell-labs.co/who/dmr/chist.html http://cm.bell-labs.co/who/dmr/chist.html

- ks2048 3y agoI was wondering who was keeping this site/domain up because I thought Bell Labs no longer existed. Only now discovered it’s owned by Nokia (although at a different domain: bell-labs.com)
- CodeCompost 3y agoThis was discussed 3 months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36187174 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36187174 It's a different url though.
- p4bl0 3y agoThe history of the Unix pipe operator linked from this page was interesting: http://cm.bell-labs.co/who/dmr/hist.html#pipes http://cm.bell-labs.co/who/dmr/hist.html#pipes
- defrost 3y agoIf that tickles your interest you might enjoy some of Doug' other works https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~doug/ https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~doug/ particulary the actively adversial anti-quicksort https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~doug/source.html https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~doug/source.html
- rob74 3y agoIn a typical "early internet" straightforward way, you can just leave out the "dmr" from the URL and get a listing of some other ex-Bell Labs employees. Although at least two other ones I know about (Ken Thompson and Rob Pike) are missing. Some who you might know that are there include Brian Kernighan (the "K" in "K&R C", co-author of "The C Programming Language" and later "The Go Programming Language") and Russ Cox (I think he's the only ex-Bell Labs person left working on Go at Google after Thompson and Pike retired?).
