I suspect I have a different understanding of capitalism. To me it simply means free markets. Something the author is taking advantage of to build the life she wants. But she seems to dislike the hustle culture that has formed within our current economic system.
- louwrentius 3y agoCapitalism is so much more (and worse) than that. And “you criticize society yet you participate in it” is never a noteworthy/ relevant observation.
- xupybd 3y agoThat was not my point. My point was that she has the freedom to hustle all she wants or to do it the way she is. That's great.
- louwrentius 3y agoBut you imply it’s because of free markets / capitalism that enables it and it makes her a hypocrite. That’s implied.
- xupybd 3y agoI'm trying to separate the ideas here. She uses the term "capitalist imperative of growth". I would say that is a culture that has formed withing our economic system not a required or desirable part of it. Free markets however are something different. They are simply the freedom to transact. That freedom is something good. An example of the beauty of that freedom is the Authors ability to live the life she wants while others get to live the lives they want working like crazy people. Once you separate the ideas there is no implication of hypocrisy.
- louwrentius 3y agoShe hates capitalism You define capitalism (incorrectly) as free markets You point out her freedom depends op free markets So she hates “free markets” but she is able to work this way because of it: she’s a hypocrite. Don’t gaslight.
- xupybd 3y agoI'm not gaslighting you. I'm telling you what I think and what I mean. What a terrible thing to accuse me of. Now you're just being a jerk.
- louwrentius 3y agoIt’s basic reading comprehension, your original text clearly calls her out on hating capitalism yet depending on it according your own definition of capitalism. I’m happy to be called a jerk by someone who is clearly dishonest and gaslights https://thenib.com/mister-gotcha/ https://thenib.com/mister-gotcha/
- xupybd 3y agoThat is not was I'm saying! For one I did not say you are a jerk. I said you are being a jerk. That is a description of your specific actions not you as a person. To have a reasonable conversation you must allow people to explain their meaning. Not impart your own meaning into their words. To accuse me of being dishonest and gaslighting is not warranted.
