I see a lot of different ideas that fall under the flag of socialism, but I keep seeing good results from one disjoint set of ideas being used to justify another which has objectively terrible results.

No one was advocating for socialism. GP was complaining about liberalism. What I actually see is a boogeyman of "socialism" continually used as a justification for why US red states are in such poor condition to reasonably centrist liberal states like Sweden. Feel free to compare metrics like life expectancy, HDI, education, and gini.
