Not much detail on the actual condition other than its a mitochondrial disease. There's lots of things that can cause that, so the news article doesnt really serve much purpose other than to tell us, that the NHS has no solution and its going to court.
I know doctors can be restricted by NHS trusts, they can also be possessive, defensive if their experimental theory's and treatments are under the spotlight and their tests are often but mere jigsaws pieces to a big picture, so a lot of theorising, testing and elimination needs to be done.
The fact she's on a ventilation would suggest iron and manganese is involved, there 1000-2000 mitochondria in each liver cell, and just one mitochondria in other cells. As we are complex chemical reactions, identifying the problem is often half the problem in unusual cases. Is it a membrane issue which would involve vit E's (tocopherols and tocotrienols), or a zinc/cysteine/choline issue? And those are just the more commonly known chemicals involved.
Its a shame more details are not public.
