Ask HN: What is your policy regarding working overtime and on weekends
- NoZebra120vClip 3y agoI am part-time in these United States, and as such, my weekly hours have a hard limit at 29, and overtime is out of the question. However, my schedule is 100% flexible. My workweek is reckoned as beginning on Monday, so I can generally clock enough hours to be done by Thursday, or even Wednesday. If I work shorter shifts, I may work on Saturdays, which hardly bothers me, because I love my work, and what else would I do? But I do tend to keep my Sundays (and Holy Days of Obligation) holy, for worship and recreation.

- dang 3y agoCould you please stop posting unsubstantive comments and flamebait, especially ideological flamebait? You've unfortunately been doing it repeatedly. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for. You may not owe capitalist parasites better, but you owe this community better if you're participating in it. If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.
- BillyTheMage 3y agoI apologize. I can see how some of my comments could be seen as flamebait, but that's certainly not how I meant it. I guess my idea of what's "on-topic" is different from everyone else's. I don't consider things "off-topic" or "flamebait" just because they contain political language. This particular comment (the one you replied to) was a direct answer to the question. The language might be a little too strong but it's how I approach working overtime. I think this view is popular enough to warrant representation. The OP wanted to know what people think about working overtime, and now they're aware of an additional viewpoint, which is what I assume they were looking for. And I'd like to point out the fact that people don't get called out for political comments equally here. Pro-capitalists here get by with posting as much propaganda as they want. Only people who question the almighty status-quo are told to review the rules or else. I see people all the time calling for strict laws and other government stuff, and a decent conversation always ensues, with nobody complaining about the inherent politics involved in the conversation. What's up with that hypocritical stuff? I think the only way to solve this problem is to reword the rule to: "no discussions involving ideas related to human social organization". I will do my best to avoid political comments where they aren't necessary, but sometimes something just needs to be said because it's part of the conversation.
- dang 3y ago> people don't get called out for political comments equally here. Pro-capitalists here get by with posting as much propaganda as they want Having spent the bulk of my morning drafting a long reply to someone who was claiming exactly the opposite bias (but in exactly the same way), I have to insist that this perception is illusory. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37384133 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37384133 I think the reason it feels that way to you (and feels the opposite way to that other user!) is because all of us tend to notice the data points we dislike, and to weight them more heavily. There are plenty of comments that "don't get called out"—more than enough for cognitive bias to kick in and produce whatever image is guaranteed to be most irritating to you. Lots of past explanation about this: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20notice%20dislike&sort=byDate&type=story&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que... All I can tell you is that the people who most strongly disagree with you about all things political are completely convinced that the site and the mods are biased against them. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26148870 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26148870 > I think the only way to solve this problem is to reword the rule to: "no discussions involving ideas related to human social organization" That's impossible on a site dedicated to intellectual curiosity (https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html), and for a host of other reasons as well. If you (or anyone) want to read more about how we moderate politics on HN, here's a link to lots of past explanations: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=political%20overlap%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&so...
- BillyTheMage 3y agoI think I understand now. Thanks for taking the time to explain it. Like I said it was never my intention to flamebait.
- dang 3y agoAppreciated! If you still have questions, let me know.
