But how can this be!
Because according to Apple the only way to get decent SSD speeds is with an SOC.
It must all be integrated so we can’t upgrade or add to a system ourselves, because otherwise the performance will be terrible!
- Tijdreiziger 3y agoDoes Apple have the SSD on-chip, though? Looking at the iFixit teardown it seems that it’s a separate chip (though I’m far from an expert on the topic) https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Mac+Mini+M2+Teardown/157365#s329375 https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Mac+Mini+M2+Teardown/157365#...
- firecall 3y agoThat is correct. I was being rather cavalier in my use of the term SOC. The M1/M2 have the CPU/GPU/RAM as part of the package. The SSDs are just soldered on Not my area at all :-) Now it's time to insert my usual whinge about having to pay AU$900 for a 2TB SSD drive upgrade!
- vGPU 3y agoThe studio’s SSD is modular. What’s interesting is that the nand chips don’t have a controller on them. It’s just a nand chip. The controller is build into the soc.
