- paulryanrogers 3y agoSo the Mexican military claims to use to track cartels yet in practice use it against journalists and activists?! Perhaps I just fail at reading yet that's what it reads like.

- speakfreely 3y agoInterestingly, the current administration was one of the previous spying targets. AMLO definitely came in as an outsider and had much of the same problems trying to unseat the "deep state"/institutional ruling powers of Mexico as Trump had when he became president in the US. However, AMLO has been much more effective in transforming the state to his liking: he purchased the loyalty of the military with infrastructure projects and he's completely gutted the civilian federal law enforcement apparatus and re-hired all the federal police into a new agency with management loyal to his political party. The security organizations of the Mexican national government are effectively under single-party control at this point. But when it comes to pesky journalists asking questions, the new party has the same (if not less) patience than the last one. Expect to see more spying in the future on anyone who isn't towing the party line.
- speakfreely 3y agoTo downvoters: if the phrase "deep state" offends you, you really ought to take off your partisan goggles. Every bureaucracy that grows large enough has its own internal power structures and agenda. The term "deep state" was used by Trump but does not imply support of him when being used to describe issues in other countries.
- adl 3y agoThe Mexican military (and the police, and the politicians) ARE the cartels. They use it against their enemies: journalists and activists.

How do the journalists know who is responsible for infecting the phones?
