The 2016 and 2020 Presidential contests were actually decided by a relatively small number of votes in precisely the same counties. As noted by Scott Adams in his podcast, when there is a challenge with massive payoff and relatively scant penalties for shenanigans, it is ludicrous to think that there is NOT game afoot. Anyone not calling for strongly auditable election systems and a re-emphasis on ballot security is not credible, in my view.
