My generation (~30-35 yo) learned it in elementary school and I remember it being quite awesome at the time. My gut feeling is that we're not starting to have kids and we want to show them how to "program" a computer with tools that stuck us as "awesome" back then. I might be totally off, but I think it's a plausible explanation. For the record, my kid is totally learning GW-Basic.
