The linked article is rather short, however the references on that page are interesting. This is an interesting topic. My name (Daniël) is often written as Daniel, just because people don't know how to type an "ë" on their computer or smartphone. I've setup a compose key on my keyboard, so I can press <compose> <"> <e>. I guess this is a leftover from when I used Sun systems, where the keyboard had a physical compose key.
