I had an emergency appendectomy at Erlanger in Chattanooga, and whoever sutured me back up accidentally punctured my intestine, didn’t realize it, and sent me home. Ended up in serious condition. I attempted to at least have the hospital cover the bill, but they wouldn’t. So I (and mostly my insurance company) paid thousands for their mistake. Laws heavily protect physicians in this respect, and it makes sense to a degree, but this seemed like an elementary error.
From the conversations I had at the time with my surgeon, his lack of communication about first-hand knowledge of what went wrong had me wondering if he did the surgery at all. Reading this article, it sounds quite possible that for such a routine surgery, he may have handed it off. Or at least left a resident to sew things back up. Based on the quotes in this article, it sounds like residents can be pretty shit at their jobs.
