Reverse engineering. Systems programming. Firmware. Sometimes yea, people have a career in an adjacent field and hack on emulators on the evenings. Other times I've ran across incredibly talented individuals with significant contributions that have never been employed in tech. I've seen multiple instances of this when a younger individual gets involved in a project they don't feel comfortable putting their real identity on for fear of hassles with Japanese companies known to be litigious.
