I personally think it's a good idea to do something like this two to four times a year. If it were me, I'd arrange a come if you want meeting on a Friday every quarter in some fun town and then let the people have the weekend to have a good time and get to know each other if they want. It's great when you've been working with someone solving problems and then meeting them in person and finding you get along really good. Those interpersonal relationships aren't as important as the return to office people say they are, but they can make things run a little more smoothly and find chemistry.
